Polly Agatha - Christmas Sailing

CHRISTMAS SAILING

Saturday 28th December

“I saw three ships come sailing in…”

Polly is still up and running over Christmas and the New Year so if you fancy blowing the Christmas cobwebs away with some brisk sailing in Weymouth Bay why not come and join us on 28th December.

The festivities will continue on board with coffee, mince pies and a festive picnic lunch at anchor (with mulled wine and perhaps a tot of rum or brandy at the appropriate moment). Time on the water can be great at this time of year, depending of course on the weather, so why not give us a call if you fancy it.

£100 Per person – 1 day sail

Also book a post New Year day sail from 2nd to 5th January (same deal as above). By all means take a look at the weather and call at the last minute if you wish – we may have availability (call Mark to discuss).

Channel Islands Cruise

Our first long cruise of the season, a trip to the Channel Islands to enjoy the 75th anniversary Liberation Day celebrations and to cruise the beautiful Islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney.

These are destinations that I know well having lived, worked and sailed in Guernsey for a number of years. The Liberation Day celebrations on the 9th May are a Bank Holiday highlight in the Channel Islands (it’s a public Holiday there to celebrate their Liberation
on May 9th 1945).  This is a special celebration on the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2. There are events all around the harbour in St Peter Port, including music, street fairs and of course the buzzing restaurants and bars of the town (and believe me there are some great restaurants, bars and clubs in St. Peter Port).

We plan to be in St Peter Port to enjoy the celebrations, and we will be in the company of an illustrious WW2 participant in the form of HMS Medusa.

The Medusa is a harbour defence motor launch and is the only remaining example of her type in sea going condition. She formed part of the Western task force in the invasion of Normandy and with her then ‘state of the art’ RDF bravely led the minesweepers which cleared channels through the minefields for the incoming invasion fleet on the morning of D Day. She then remained on station under fire for 30 hours. In May 1945 she also took the surrender of the German forces in Ijmuiden. She has been lovingly preserved in immaculate condition and will be open to visitors.

After the celebrations  and depending, as ever, on weather, wind and tide we then hope to explore the other Channel Islands. Returning to the UK on 20th May.

£1500 pp – whole trip; £650 (6/5 -10/5); £650 (12/5 – 16/5); £360 (18/5 – 20/5)

Trip 12

Monday 6th July – Monday 20th july

Brest/Douarnenez – Festivals of the Sea

A wonderful trip to the famous Brest and Douarnenez festivals. Held every 4 years these wonderful festivals are a celebration of  traditional sailing, sea craft and music held in the beautiful old ports of Brest and Douarnenez.
We set off from Portland on the 6th and head for the Chenal du Four with possible stopovers in the Channel Islands or ports along the north coast of Brittany depending, as ever, on wind and weather.

We plan to arrive at Brest in time for the start of the Festival on 10th July and enjoy a few days relaxing at the festival or sailing in the sheltered waters of Rade de Brest. Brest is of course the major French naval base on the Atlantic cost dating back to Napoleonic times and if you want to get a feeling for the area and its naval history  (and perhaps get in the mood for the trip) you could do worse than read ‘Hornblower and the Hotspur’ (not that we are planning for adventure  and ‘daring-do’ on that scale!).

On 14th or 15th we will set off through the Goulet de Brest  and cruise in company with an amazing array of traditional vessels of all shapes and sizes to the Old Port of Douarnenez.

Douarnenez is a delightful picturesque harbour dating back to the 14thC and is small enough offer a more intimate atmosphere perhaps than the grandeur of Brest. However, it is also a thriving fishing port with real  buzz and a very Breton feel to the bars and restaurants on the quay side.

Fourteen nights aboard  but expect to eat a few meals ashore to enjoy the atmosphere of the festivals and get the most out of the French/Breton cuisine particularly the wonderful seafood. Please note also that you can do as much or as little of this trip as you wish. The trip can be broken into legs or stages e.g. some may prefer to make their own way back after either of the festivals or indeed meet us out there for the celebrations and/or the  cruising – call Mark to discuss your requirements.)

£2000.00 for the full fourteen nights or £150 per night for any part of the trip -you choose

Solent Sailing

The sheltered waters of the Solent provide an ideal cruising ground. Sailing from Haslar Marina Gosport we can enjoylunch at anchor in Osborne Bayand perhaps spend the night in bustling Cowes (the world wide home ofyachting). We can explore the tranquil beauty of the Beaulieu River and visit Bucklers Hard the historic site of the yards which built many of the ships of Nelson’s navy.

Wind and tide permitting there is also the option of a picnic lunch aboard in the atmospheric and magical surroundings of Newtown Creek.

Channel Islands Cruise

Another cruise to my favourite destination, the Channel Islands. This time we feature the Guernsey Air Display on Thursday 10th September.
Formerly known as the battle of Britain Air display this has been an annual fixture in the Guernsey calendar for over forty years. Aboard Polly in the harbour at St. Peter Port we have front row seats for an air show which features an impressive array of Military aircraft both historical and modern day. This event is held particularly to remember and honourthose who served in the the RAF during WW2 .

We depart from Portland on Friday 28th August and gently cruise to St Peter Port arriving on 30th/31st August, after taking in a stopover in beautiful harbour of Braye on Alderney.
From 1st September we will explore the glorious Channel Islands. There is no fixed itinerary as everything depends on the wind, weather and tides. We could visit Herm or Sark or Jersey returning to St Peter Port for 5th September. From 6th to 11th we will once again explore the Islands, perhaps visiting some of the picturesque bays on the south of Guernsey (Fermain, Moulin Huet or Saints are all options), or some of the lovely anchorages of Herm or Sark. Or we could sail South perhaps to Jersey to enjoy the lively sophistication of St. Hellier.

We will return to St Peter Port on 9th to take up poll position for the air display on 10th.We will depart from Guernsey on 12th or 13th returning to our home port in Portland Dorset for the 15th with perhaps a stopover in Alderney or Cherbourg.
