Trip 5

Friday 3rd May to Sunday 12th May

Channel Islands Cruise

Our first long cruise of the season, a trip to the Channel Islands to enjoy the Liberation Day celebrations and to cruise the Beautiful Islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney.

These are destinations that I know well having lived, worked and sailed in Guernsey for a number of years. The Liberation Day celebrations on the 9th May are a bank holiday high light in the Channel Islands (it’s a public Holiday there to celebrate their Liberation
on May 9th 1945). There are events all around the harbour in St Peter Port and St Hellier, including music, street fairs and of course the buzzing restaurants and bars of the town (and believe me there are some great restaurants, bars and clubs in St. Peter Port).
We plan to be in St Peter Port to enjoy the celebrations, and perhaps also to visit some of the historic wartime sites of interest on Guernsey.

Then, depending, as ever, on weather, wind and tide we also hope to stopover in the quiet harbour of Braye (Alderney) and sample the atmosphere of the picturesque and unique Islands of Herm and Sark where numerous quiet anchorages are possible.

Trip 7

Trip 7 – May 23nd-27th 2019 – 5 days

Pilot Cutter World Championships Falmouth, Fowey, St.Mawes, Falmouth

A dozen or more pilot cutters get together every year to test themselves against each other. This is not a trip for the faint hearted, the sailing is keen and at times hard work as we have to sail her from Falmouth where we’ll meet, then down to Fowey, then race round to St.Mawes and then finish in Falmouth! In the evenings we raft up with the other boats and have a BBQ and a pint, chatting over the days events with the other crews.

The racing starts on Friday, from a gorgeous little hideaway on the Polruan side of the River Fowey, called Prime Cellars. Pilot cutter ‘Hespa’ owners kindly throw open their doors, and host the first night of festivities. Friday morning we all set off for a race from Fowey to St Mawes, and this is where the fun starts. With these powerful boats sailing in the harbour, it is an amazing sight. Saturday and Sunday are race days, with one or two races on each day. Saturday night we spend up the River Fal, and have a BBQ, and share stories from the day.

Every night is a social feast, and great fun. No previous experience of sailing is necessary, and you will have time to get to know Polly Agatha before racing starts. You will find yourselves enriched by getting involved in the pulling of ropes, taking the helm and handling of sail. Although racing is involved, this is primarily a fun, social event, and open to all. If you have friends and family who wish to watch, then St Mawes Castle is a good place to take in the action as a spectator.

Yacht Charter - Paimpol Music Festival

Trip 12

27th July – 11th August

Paimpol (The Festival du Chant de Marin) and North Brittany cruising (via Channel Islands)

A wonderful trip to the famous Paimpol Chant de Marin. A festival of music and a celebration of traditional sailing and sea craft held in the beautiful old port of Paimpol.
We set off from Portland on the weekend of 27th and head for Paimpol with possible stopovers in the Channel Islands depending, as ever, on wind and weather. We plan to arrive at Paimpol on 1st August in time join the festivities at this fantastic festival of the sea.
It is probably the best of the Brittany Sea festivals being located in the small area of the Old Port of Paimpol among the restaurants and bars and the narrow side streets of the town centre.
Polly will have ‘pole position’ in the Old Port amongst the numerous traditional boats which congregate there every two years for this great event- ideal for enjoying the atmosphere of one of the great ‘sea parties’ of the Summer.
The festival concludes on Sunday 4th and on the following day we will begin a leisurely exploration of parts of the North Brittany coast and then wend our way back to Portland via the Channel Islands once again.

Fifteen nights aboard (but please note you can do as much or as little of this as you wish and the trip can be broken into legs e.g. some may prefer to make their own way back after the festival or indeed meet us out there for the celebrations and the Brittany and CI cruise – call Mark to discuss your requirements.)
